What Fictionistas is planning for 2023

Welcome to Fictionistas, the community of fiction writers (and fellow travelers) on Substack! We have some great news to share, so with no further ado, let’s get started!

What’s up, Fictionistas?!

It’s a new year for Fictionistas, and we have been scheming all kinds of new opportunities for writers to get to know each other, build our community, and help bring new readers to everyone’s Substacks. Check out the video from this week’s Zoom call for all the details as well as a wider conversation about what’s going on in Fictionistas-land, but here are the highlights

Let’s Write Together!

Starting this February, Fictionistas is launching a brand new experience for our fiction writing Substack friends: The Great Substack Prompt Celebration. Each month Nicole Rivera of Stop Writing Alone and Heather Huffman of Sprinkled Inspiration will be hosting a three-part fiction writing experience that will connect you with community, inspire new fiction, and get your writing seen by a brand new crew of readers. Check your inboxes on February 2, 2023 to get information on how you can participate in our live Zoom Writing Prompt Party.

Fictionistas Office Hours

Our second announcement comes from Brian Reindel of Future Thief:

Office Hours is back on Fictionistas with a vengeance! Maybe not a vengeance so much as a gentle invitation to participate. It's an opportunity to say “hello,” share what you're working on, ask questions of the community, and be seen. Not in a creepy, “we're watching you” sort of way, either. The next office hours will be held Tuesday, January 31, starting at 7 am EST, and running throughout the day. Come and go as you
please; ask, answer, and be heard.

The Great Substack Story Challenge

Back in the olden days of 2022, we ran a super fun “exquisite corpse,” or round-robin, writing challenge called the Great Substack Story Challenge. So many people loved the project and wanted to participate that, with coordination by Jordan Petersen (of Dispatches from Inner Space), we’re doing it all over again!

The first couple of chapters are already live, and you can follow along as they get published each week.

It’s a super fun project, and already there are rumblings of another one, possibly happening over days and not weeks (check out the video for more).

Other updates

We have created a small organizing committee for Fictionistas. These folks include myself, Geoffrey Golden, Anthony Lora, Brian Reindel, Jordan Petersen, Nicole Rivera, Heather Huffman, and Sam Corey.

If you have an idea for something we can do at Fictionistas, or would like to help with our current activities or write guest articles for us, just drop us an email and let us know. Pretty much everything we do around here initially started as an idea from someone in the community, so if you want to try something new, go for it!

As they say, it takes a village—but not the kind M. Night had in mind!
