Where has the summer gone?

Welcome to Fictionistas, a Substack by and for writers of fiction on the Substack platform.

For those of us in the northern hemisphere, summer is rapidly coming to an end. Soon school will be starting up (if it hasn’t already) and we’ll be sledding towards the holiday season. But regardless of the weather, Fictionistas continues on, steadfast, during both iced tea and pumpkin latte seasons.

Last week we had our August Zoom chat. Although some may still be squeezing in a final bit of vacation, we had a great turnout—our best to date, in fact.

What we discussed

We talked a little about the Great Substack Story Challenge, which has just concluded. I mentioned that we might do it again, and Jordan volunteered to spearhead it. That means if you missed out the first time around, you’ll get another chance! Details to come…

Also on the table was the question of burnout and how to keep going. That topic morphed into the question of how to face one of our biggest demons as newsletter writers: social media promotion.

Of course, we mentioned the Substack Writers Unite Discord, which is a great way to stay in touch between meetings. We also encouraged participating in the weekly Substack Office Hours / Shout Out threads for all Substack writers, both of which you can learn more about if you subscribe to On Substack. In addition to Fictionistas, these are wonderful places to get to know fellow Substackers, get questions answered, and learn more about promotions, going paid, etc.

As always, I also invited folks to consider contributing to Fictionistas. Two participants immediately reached out! If you would like to do so as well, be sure to contact us.

September Zoom Call

Substack has declared Sept. 14th to be the day of meetups. There will be in-person meetups happening in several cities, as well as virtual hangouts. And of course, Fictionistas is going to be a part of the action. We will be hosting a virtual meetup that day so we can join in the fun.

The call will be Wednesday, Sept 14th at 11 am PT / 1 pm CT / 2 pm ET / 18:00 UTC. (We alternate times to accommodate people with different schedules and time zones.) If you’re new to Fictionistas, here’s what you can expect from a meeting…

  • Meet the fiction author community on Substack.

  • Learn tips for growing your fiction newsletter.

  • Hear about the latest projects we’re working on

  • The dastardly doings of our arch-rivals, the food writers.

As always, the agenda is open, so bring your ideas and questions. If you can’t make the call live, we endeavor to bring you the recording shortly afterward.
