I am so excited to do one of your prompts one day! Currently I'm trying to finish a chapbook for a contest closing soon, beginning to write a new novel, and trying to be sure I maintain some semblance of a cadence on my newsletter 🙃 I love this Substack and am ready to participate when I can!
To your creativity question, I normally read/watch TV as an escape, but recently have been trying to find books in the genre I'm writing my novel in to get comps and learn some of the tropes. Music is constantly fluctuating between creativity, escapism, and nostalgia!
The Invitation by Jennifer McMahon was a good find. I'm going to read more of hers and more Rachel Harrison. I just discovered a book this morning that I haven't read yet but I think will be a great comp called The Haunting of Alejandra by V. Castro.
i have trent reznor and NiN on heavy rotation... there is something about the droning rhythm & the contrast between noise and melody that really helps me stop thinking and start writing honestly
Oh that is wonderful that you have found that! I have to be careful with music with lyrics, but there are times I find the right mix of music that is just the right vibe for the project I am working on AND I have heard enough times that the words blend into the melody and no longer distract me, but, instead, inspire me!
OMG Vince! I am so sorry! I was just leaving a message for Jackie and Heather saying, "I don't think I got any messages of anyone looking for it so maybe I got away with my tardiness! I was absolutely convinced that I had scheduled it for yesterday morning and didn't get around to officially checking on it until this morning. It was still sitting in DRAFTS! Ugh. Here it is, can't wait to read your story: https://fictionistas.substack.com/p/aprils-lets-write-together-537
Absolutely. The thread for sharing the stories doesn't go live until tomorrow and then everyone has until Sunday to post their stories!
Oh Boy, what fun! I've got some airplane time this weekend. I'll have to pull something together. Thanks for doing this.
Airplane time. How appropriate!
Jackie beat me to it, but, yes, the airplane feels like the perfect place to play with this particular prompt! Happy writing and flying!

Reading for comps is always such a fun "assignment" in writing life, I think. Do you have a fave find in your reading research yet?
