This is such helpful advice and insight for me on the novel I'm currently writing, involving cave art sites around the world. I think I need to reach out to scientists and local people from the areas I'm writing about.
You will learn so much! My current series features a young man who was initially headed for a vocation as an Episcopal priest and ended up going into Unitarian Universalism. For the first book in the series, my SME was a retired Episcopal priest. I though I knew a lot about that denomination, but my SME opened my eyes.

Perfect timing to receive this post. I wrote the first draft of a short story and realized I need some help from an SME for the next draft.
I really appreciate the advice to not promise too big of a role up front, because that's exactly what I would have done.
... a mistake I have made! Glad you could avoid it. <grin>
